The gesture comes after Musk made public acknowledgement that some of his recent online attacks on the President "went too far."
At a White House ceremony centered on California's electric car rules, Trump simply said, "I like Tesla." The approval is a turnaround from his previous position, when he had threatened to pull his red Tesla off the grounds at the White House amidst growing tensions with Musk.
The renewed friendliness was only a day after Musk mellowed his tone on social media. In an X post, the head of Tesla and SpaceX penned, "I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far." The remark seemed to indicate a readiness to make amends after a tempestuous exchange that had made national headlines.
The war of words online erupted after Musk resigned from his advisory position in the Trump administration, where he had been a special government employee. Immediately after his departure, Musk denounced Trump's tax and spending bill as a "disgusting abomination." His statement set off a chain of public insults between the two powerful figures.
At the same time, last Thursday, June 12, President Trump signed a resolution repealing California's groundbreaking policy that aimed to prohibit the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. In retaliation, the state proclaimed its plans to sue the federal action in court.
As the week draws to a close, indications of a possible truce between Trump and Musk are on the horizon, suggesting a reprisal in their showstopping relationship—one that has navigated alternating currents of cooperation and confrontation in recent years.
